The Iconic Puzzle Game Couldn't Succeed at This Gaming Ceremony — Another Award Type Could Fix That

Whenever a prominent honors show nears, you'll find a demand for the addition fresh award types to honor underappreciated efforts and delight the spirits of fans with niche passions.

Another commentator has already made advocating for terror-themed awards. That would be fantastic. The same goes for board games, representing someone's personal cause. However, I must insist for pushing forward because like all dedicated enthusiasts, there's a strong justification backing this proposal is the most urgent and significant. This is the request: We need a classification for brain-teasing titles.

Categorizing Game Types

Categorizing art by genre is not a science; it remains highly personal, and it will always start arguments concluding with vague boundaries. It's understandable that film award organizations avoid this approach. However, it represents an essential concession for the industry of video games, which are so diverse it's challenging to consider them one unified medium.

To recognize the complete range of gaming accomplishments to gain proper attention, while allowing diverse titles to compete fairly, classification by type becomes crucial.

Current Gaming Award Categories

The major gaming awards currently feature classifications covering Action, Action/Adventure, RPG experiences, Fighting, Simulation and strategy titles, and Sports/Racing games. Collectively, these six categories effectively encompass many game types, making space possible accommodating various experiences.

Not so for logic-based experiences. No suitable classification appears to accommodate them. Consider three of recent excellent titles, each quite distinct: structural challenges in a particular game, intense tile-matching of another game, engaging interpersonal challenges of a third title. What category would fit them within current classifications? Unfortunately, nowhere.

Recognition Challenges

Numerous examples exist excellent brain-teasers launched regularly without proper recognition during gaming ceremonies, if they accidentally match classification types such as Mobile Game, Virtual reality experiences, or the extremely competitive Indie races.

  • One classic puzzle game got overlooked in any category in 2014
  • A different innovative game missed out that year
  • A beloved organization game got ignored in 2021
  • Just some brain-teasers managed to sneak into niche award types

Value of Brain-Teasers

Commonly they're small games, however the design of the puzzle game is of massive significance. Famous handheld logic titles count as most popular titles globally continuing this trend for an extended period.

The famous puzzle experience challenges famous sandbox experiences for the title of highest-selling title ever; it also contends for top gaming experience. Logic titles represent cornerstones to the art of video games, while interacting with diverse game types.

Proposal and Rationale

Puzzle games wouldn’t have that issue. It would be easy to populate multiple candidates interesting, varied, worthy titles every year with ease — perhaps, with difficulty, because you’d have to leave many worthy titles.

And to reiterate, these include experiences without proper classification in important events. Puzzle game makers function at the challenging frontier of video game design, developing some of most fundamental forms within interactive entertainment. Comparable to cinema stunt performers, they warrant appreciation. Don't make them wait 35 years.
