The Former President's Woke Alarm Misses The Continent's Real Danger: Economic Stagnation.

Donald Trump's security policy document offers a misguided assessment of the European Union. It claims that unrestrained immigration and so-called "woke" policies pose an grave risk to the continent's identity. However, this argument rests on a serious misreading of the reality. The actual danger facing Europe is not societal but economic and technological backwardness.

A Glaring Growth Divide Separating Europe and the US

The data paint a stark picture. Between 2008 and 2023, American economic output grew by eighty-seven percent, compared to a paltry thirteen and a half percent growth for the EU. During this period, EU GDP per capita fell from over three-quarters to just 50% of the American figure. Remarkably, even Mississippi now boasts a greater average income than major European economies like France and Italy.

Currently, roughly half of the world’s 50 largest technology firms are American, while a mere four are European.

The Technological Deficit: A Critical Question

The growing disparity stems from stronger efficiency gains in the US, fueled by breakthroughs and better use of resources. The landscape of world technology leadership is overwhelmingly American. In the last fifty years, 241 US firms have scaled into enterprises valued at more than $10bn, versus just 14 in Europe.

This disparity prompts a vital issue: As the competition for future industries like semiconductors, AI, and fusion energy, where does the EU stand? Experts widely agree it is essentially a contest between two between the United States and China, with Europe entering at a significant handicap.

Root Causes of Europe's Innovation Gap

A number of key factors explain this technological divide.

  • Venture Capital: The US boasts a much more robust and more dynamic system for financing new ventures. Europe still lacks a true capital markets union, which limits the growth potential of new firms.
  • Regulatory Fragmentation: Excessive and fragmented rules hinder European business. A American entrepreneur can launch a product under a single set of laws to access a consumer base of over 330 million. The European Union, despite a larger population size, is divided among twenty-seven separate systems, creating significant market obstacles.
  • Mindset Differences: Attitudes toward entrepreneurial failure differ sharply. In parts of Europe, business failure was once met with stigma, whereas in the United States, it is often considered a badge of experience.
  • Defense Spending: The United States enjoys a deeply integrated innovation pipeline linking defense and academia. Europe's long-term lack of spending in military capabilities has weakened its ability in pioneering research.

The Road Ahead: Grounds for Cautious Optimism

Despite these hurdles, one can find causes for hope. European leaders are increasingly aware of the severe threat and have started to propose substantial change. Key analyses on EU competitiveness and the internal market point to the need for major changes.

With the right incentives and rule changes, Europe's strengths might enable far greater levels of business-led breakthroughs.

Europe retains considerable advantages: skilled workforce, top-tier education systems, and world-class labs. Alongside a large internal market and high savings rates, these foundations could unleash a new wave of investment and entrepreneurship.

Crucially, even if the EU does not become the leader in creating cutting-edge tech, it can still significantly increase productivity by implementing and tailoring advancements from other regions.

A Critical Juncture

The European Union now faces a decisive crossroads. To paraphrase a famous line, decline often happens "slowly, then all at once". So far, the continent's technological decline has been gradual. However, without decisive action to tackle its deep-seated problems, today's slow erosion could give way to a rapid and permanent loss of global economic relevance.
