RAF Typhoon FGR4s have operated alongside French aircraft in a joint strike targeting an underground arms cache in Syria operated by the Islamic State group (IS), per a report from the British defence ministry.

The site, identified by surveillance, was thought to be containing munitions and bombs, the announcement noted, and was situated in mountains just above Palmyra in the heart of Syria.

"Our aircraft used Paveway IV guided bombs to strike a number of access tunnels providing entry to the site... early reports are that the strike was effective," the ministry announced.

There was no indication of any civilian impact in the operation late on Saturday and all the aircraft made a safe return, the ministry further stated.

The British jets were assisted by a Voyager tanker plane.

Daesh - referred to as Daesh - established extremist governance over parts of Iraq and Syria prior to its 2019 collapse.

"This action shows the UK's leading role, and determination to stand shoulder to shoulder with our allies, to eliminate any resurgence of the terrorist group and their dangerous and violent ideologies in the area," UK Defence Secretary the minister said.

British military aircraft have conducted overwatch operations over Syria to "forestall any attempted resurgence" of IS following its routing at the climactic battle in Baghuz in 2019, the ministry said.

"I must thank the personnel of our armed forces who took part in this mission for their expertise and their courage," he commented. "Including them were a great many British troops deployed over the festive period. This operation, to remove dangerous terrorists who pose a risk to our way of life, shows how UK forces are prepared to act, continuously, protecting the UK domestically and powerful internationally."

During December, the US military executed what it termed a "major assault" targeting IS targets in Syria, following an assault claimed the lives of two US servicemembers and a local interpreter in the Palmyra area.

The UN says Daesh still has an estimated 5,000 to 7,000 fighters in Iraq and Syria.
